Tired of the same old salad? Salads don't have to be boring! Here are a few ways to Jazz up your salads.
Display your salad!
Its all about the vessel in which you choose to display your masterpiece of a salad in. Even a simple salad will look appetizing in a bright colorful bowl or a beautiful wooden bowl. We eat with our eyes as the old adage goes. Check out Jamailah's selection of handmade olive wood and ceramic tableware.
Salads are like paintings: the more color the better!
Imagine your choice of greens in the bowl or plate or the vessel it self is a blank canvas. What you choose to add to it is the paint. Color can come from all sorts of different healthy add ins:
Vegtables - There are all sorts of vegtables that could provide a pop of colour that are great for you such as cherry tomatos, cucumbers, red onion, peppers, mushrooms, snow peas, corn; nothing is off limits.
Fruits - When you think of salad, you don't necessarily think fruit. But why not? Fruit is colorful! Try adding any type of berries, apple, avocado, plums, watermelon, or even dried fruits like cranberries. Fruit can also be used to make great home made vinegrettes! Again, the sky's the limit.
Nuts, seeds, grains - There are all sorts of nuts and seeds that you can add for some crunch and they even have color. Good healthy options are almonds, pecans, sunflower seeds, pumpin seeds, walnuts, quinoa, etc. These also have other nutrient value as well. Make sure you use the unsalted optons so not to add a ton of added sodium.
Cheese - What isn't better with cheese? There are a variety of cheeses that can be added to salads to add colour, texture, and also taste. Try adding feta, goat cheese, parmesan, cubed ceddar, brie, blue cheese, parmigano, etc. What ever your choose, its the right choice.
Herbs - Although not as colorful, herbs such as mint, parsley, fresh garlic, basil, etc, they will add flavorful color in your mouth.
Protein - Although not always needed, some times it is nice to add a bit of meaty protein such as, but not limited to, Chicken. You can also add beans to your salads such as black beans, kidney beans, or chickpeas or what ever you fancy.
Be Creative! Think kitchen sink!
No matter what you decide to add to your salad including the type of leafy canvas (lettuce, spinach, kale, or even nothing at all), be creative! Look through your fridge and use what you find. Put what ever you want into your salad except for maybe the kitchen sink. Think outside of the box! Good Luck in creating your masterpeice!
